Walk on a 51 year old volcano
My grandfather, 1973
Walk on Eldfell volcano
It erupted 51 years ago on January 23rd in the year 1973 without warning, forcing habitants to evacuate the island in one night.
The newly-formed Eldfell volcano erupted for about six months, covering much of Vestmannaeyjar in ash, destroying several hundred homes, and sending lava toward the harbour threatening to block the entrance to the port.
Join me for a hike and get to know the history of this tragic event.
About the tour
Looking for a fun adventure that’s perfect for families or beginners to hiking? Look no further. This is a 4 km trail that starts from the town centre. We’ll set off across the new lava field where 400 houses were buried under lava, before we reach the peak of Eldfell volcano. Then we descended to the Eldheimar Museum, which is a volcano museum of remembrance, where the hike will end and tickets can be purchased through The Island Guide with a discount.
While the trail to Eldfell is fairly easy, the ascent up the volcano can be a bit more challenging due to loose gravel and uphill terrain. The climb itself takes about 30 minutes, but the effort will be worth it, offering stunning 360° views
